  • Snow skills training: cramponing, ice axe and self-arrest

  • Crampons, ice axe and helmet provided
  • Licensed winter mountain guide and mule support to the refuge

Full description

In winter the High Atlas becomes a proper snow range. This eight-day expedition treats it that way: you get a training day on snow technique before anything serious, then build through progressively harder objectives to the Toubkal summit attempt.

Crampons, ice axe and helmet are provided and your guide teaches self-arrest, cramponing and safe movement on steep snow before the group commits to a summit day.

Weather and avalanche conditions decide the exact programme. The itinerary below is the plan; the guide's judgement on the day is what actually runs.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Marrakech → Imlil

Transfer, kit check and briefing in the valley.

  2. Day 2

    Acclimatisation walk

Valley walk to around 2,600 m and equipment fitting.

  3. Day 3

    Snow skills day

Crampon technique, ice axe use and self-arrest practice on a safe slope.

  4. Day 4

    Move to the refuge

Climb to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 m in winter conditions.

  5. Day 5

    First objective

A 3,500–4,000 m objective depending on snow and the group's progress.

  6. Day 6

    Toubkal summit attempt

Pre-dawn start for the 4,167 m summit in full winter kit.

  7. Day 7

    Reserve day

Second summit attempt or an alternative peak if day 6 was weathered out.

  8. Day 8

    Descent and return

Descend to Imlil, lunch and transfer back to Marrakech.

Good to know before you book

  • This is winter mountaineering, not hiking. Previous multi-day trekking experience and strong fitness are required.
  • The summit is never guaranteed — avalanche risk, snow condition and weather decide, and the guide's call is final.
  • Stiff mountaineering boots compatible with crampons are essential; rental can be arranged in Imlil.
  • Mountain rescue and winter sports cover must be included in your travel insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous winter experience?

No previous crampon experience is required — the training day covers it — but you do need strong hill fitness and previous multi-day trekking.

What happens if the weather closes in?

The eight-day format exists precisely for that. There is a reserve day, and your guide will swap objectives rather than push into unsafe conditions.

Is insurance mandatory?

Yes. Travel insurance covering trekking to 4,200 m, winter conditions and mountain rescue is required for this expedition.
